Here's everything we learned from the new Avengers: Infinity War trailer!
The new Avengers: Infinity War trailer somehow manages to up the stakes even further from the first one. This is the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and they’re clearly not messing around this time. So, as usual, we’re hunting for everything you might have missed in the new Avengers: Infinity War trailer…and as expected, it is PACKED!
By the way, here’s the trailer in case you haven’t seen it yet…
Now, let’s get down to business…
This opening shot of NYC with…something…entering the atmosphere is way more ominous than any crazy amount of CGI wizardry, armies of alien drones, or gigantic spaceships. Really great way to open this.
This scene with baby Gamora hanging out with a victorious Thanos will almost certainly be part of the story Gamora is telling Tony Stark at the start of the trailer. Unless they decide to open with a flashback detailing Thanos’ early days and Gamora’s origins, which would also be cool.
Also, you really need to read Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi’s Thanos origin story, Thanos Rising. It’s amazing.
Thanos’ armor and awesome helmet here are almost certainly from that flashback sequence as well. The helmet bears the strongest resemblance to recent designs in the comics, as well as the design for Thane, his son’s outfit in Infinity.
Just from a chronological standpoint, and it might not play out this way in the actual movie, but putting Doctor Strange and his Sanctum Sanctorum up front in this trailer is kind of reminiscent of the original Infinity Gauntlet comic story. It was Doctor Strange (along with Spider-Man and his Spidey sense) who really first sensed that shit was cosmically wrong and that Thanos was coming.
Thanos drops the Space Stone Gem (#resist) from the Tesseract (remember that?) into the Infinity Gauntlet, the glove that lets him unite the powers of all the Infinity Gems.
This is our best look yet at Captain America’s new Wakandan vibranium shield. Not that his old shield wasn’t made of vibranium. We went into detail on that here. Still betting good money Cap gets the classic back before the end of this movie, though.
This right here might be the best moment in the trailer. This is the Avengers-est moment in the MCU so far – Cap, Black Widow, Falcon, War Machine, Hulk, Vision and Scarlet Witch meeting Black Panther in Wakanda.
Assuming everyone survives, they should just give us a Captain America/Black Panther team-up movie.
Cap taking on Thanos in hand-to-hand combat is amazing. Thanos is, after all, a guy who could go at it with Thor or Hulk and come out OK. But this in particular reminds us of a specific scene from the original Infinity Gauntlet comics…
Cap is the best, you guys.
This is Ebony Maw, one of Thanos’ Black Order. Who are the Black Order, you ask?
Here’s the rest of the Black Order. From left: Proxima Midnight, holding her light spear on Loki; Ebony Maw; Corvus Glaive; and Black Dwarf (or Cull Obsidian if they’re being silly). Go read that article if you want to know more about them!
Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto is actually the time stone. Of course Thanos is coming for it…
…clearly the good Doctor wasn’t looking to give it up so easily. Ebony Maw loves to torture folks, so we’ll bet that he’s the one in charge of this monstrosity.
Where are the Guardians supposed to be here? Anyone have any ideas?
This is almost certainly Bruce Banner wearing Hulkbuster armor. The only question is whether he will also Hulk out underneath this gear. Note Falcon and War Machine flying by in the background. This is really just an amazing shot.
This is the first time we’ve seen this weird rocket booster/afterburner feature on any of Tony’s Iron Man armors. This is also eerily reminiscent of when Tony nearly sacrificed himself at the end of The Avengers. It’s not clear if he’s just investigating the craft entering the atmosphere or in hot pursuit of another potential doomsday scenario.
Which makes me worry…
Tony had better survive this movie. Look, I know we all moan and groan about how the stakes are never high enough in Marvel movies and nobody ever stays dead. But when it comes right down to it, who are you prepared to sacrifice on that altar? Tony? Nope. Steve? Nope. Bruce? Nah.
You see where this is going. If I want realism in the whole “the world is a terrible place and heroes fall in battle all the time” I’ve got Game of Thrones to break my heart. Let me have this, Marvel.
Shuri! And the fact that she’s studying an image of the Vision and his Soul Stone is…probably not a good sign for Vision’s fate. Thanos is coming for that.
I love this shot of Peter Parker sneaking off his school bus as it goes over the Queensboro Bridge. Something as simple as this just shows how Marvel Studios gets the little details of what makes Spidey who he is more than anyone else ever did.
Despite all that, well…Y’know…that Iron Spider armor looked a lot better in theory at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming than it actually looks in practice in this trailer. Hopefully Peter goes back to his usual suit when his solo sequel comes around.
It took them forever, but I’m so glad we’re going to finally get a satisfying ending to Mass Effect 3.
Thanos crushing the Tesseract like it’s nothing is, ummm…that’s kind of intimidating.
Nothing significant about this other than the fact it’s a gorgeous, perfect image of Thor. What’s he the god of, again?
Nice to see that Rhodey is back on his feet and wearing the War Machine armor again. Quite a bit of him hanging around in this trailer. He had better survive.
Wakanda forever. Also! There’s a real “George Washington Crossing the Delaware” vibe here, isn’t there?
But more importantly…
Thanos is about to learn a hard lesson.
