Spike Lee’s new joint smokes out a white guy who can pass for a BlacKkKlansman.
People moving out, people moving in, all because of the color of their skin, preachers are the only ones talking about love, nobody’s interested in learning but the teachers, but with the right white man, Spike Lee can do anything. The first BlacKkKlansman trailer dropped and it seems like law enforcement got the drop on David Duke’s Ku Klux Klan.
BlacKkKlansman stars Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), as an African-American police officer who talks the talk, at least on the phone, but gets white cop Flip Zimmerman, played by Adam Driver, to walk the walk to infiltrate a local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. Stallworth is so good playing white, he ultimately winds up becoming the head of the chapter. The film also stars Laura Harrier and Topher Grace.
This is no mere buddy cop movie, it is based on the real-life story of an undercover operation in late 1970s, but with some serious laughs. In spite of the period-piece nature of the film, it is fully contemporary, ending with footage of Donald Trump’s statements about the Charlottesville riot.
The film is produced by Lee and Get Out‘s Jordan Peele and Jason Blum. BlacKkKlansman made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a six-minute standing ovation, on May 14.
