Cloverfield 4 may be the previously announced Overlord, a World War II set film about supernatural forces impeding the D-Day invasion.
Upon the release of 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016, director Dan Trachtenberg said that the plan was to have an original standalone Cloverfield movie every year after that, kind of like an annual, cinematic version of The Twilight Zone. Then the mysterious God Particle turned out to be The Cloverfield Paradox.
Yet J.J. Abrams Bad Robot production company has seemingly made up for it by sneakily producing a fourth Cloverfield movie on the down low and right under our noses! Indeed, according to a report by Slashfilm, the quietly produced Overlord at Bad Robot and Paramount is really Cloverfield 4 in disguise, and it will be upon us in time for Halloween.
While news of a Cloverfield connection is a shock, we’ve known about the film for almost a year, as it was announced last March and was scheduled to go into production in May. But little attention has been paid since initial casting announcements, which is probably the way Abrams’ Bad Robot likes it. The movie is a World War II-set story that is incorporating supernatural elements that sound a bit like, well, The Twilight Zone meets Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Cloverfield 4 Story
Still technically titled Overlord, here is the synopsis of the film that was released last year:
On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.
An intriguing premise, the picture could veer toward horror or any other variety of genres while keeping the connective tissue of Cloverfield being original films with a smaller budget but with a major science fiction, high-concept hook. After all, Matt Reeves’ found footage monster movie in 2008’s original Cloverfield and Trachtenberg’s “trapped in a basement” alien invasion/abduction film, 10 Cloverfield Lane, were seemingly set in different universes. The Cloverfield Paradox addressed some of that, though.
Overlord also has an impressive bench of talent. It is directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) and written by Billy Ray, of Captain Phillips and The Hunger Games fame, and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant). It has also cast young up-and-comer, and son of Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street, Black Mirror). He will play one of the two central American paratroopers; the other is being portrayed by Jovan Adepo, who appeared on The Leftovers and really broke out in Denzel Washington’s Fences. The film also has Game of Thrones alumni Pilou Asbæk among its cast.
Cloverfield 4 Release Date
What is less clear is how Overlord will be released. When it was announced last year, it was scheduled for an Oct. 26, 2018 release date. However, Paramount Pictures sold The Cloverfield Paradox to Netflix. It remains unclear if Overlord will be released theatrically by Paramount or as a Netflix film.
