In case you haven’t heard: The upcoming Hellboy movie won’t be directed by Guillermo del Toro. In fact, it won’t take place in the movie universe del Toro crafted at all. This new Hellboy movie will be a reboot directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent), and David Harbour (Stranger Things) is set to star as the titular demon himself.

The movie will be R-rated and is simply titled Hellboy (it originally had a working title of Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen). The script is being penned by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Mignola himself.

Hellboy Reboot Release Date

Hellboy has finally marked its release date! The David Harbour-starring reboot will arrive on January 11, 2019.

Hellboy Reboot News

According to Deadline, there are three new additions to the cast. Sophie Okonedo plays Lady Hatton, “a resident seer at the Osiris Club, an ancient English club dedicated to uncovering supernatural mysteries.” Alistair Petrie is Lord Adam Glaren, “a high-ranking member at the club,” and Brian Gleeson will play Merlin. Yes, the wizard.

Hellboy Reboot Cast

David Harbour (Stranger Things) has been cast as Hellboy.

Joining Harbour on screen will be Deadwood and American Gods star Ian McShane (via THR) as Professor Broom, the scientist who adopts the young Hellboy.

Milla Jovovich will play the main villain, the Blood Queen, reports Deadline. The character seems to be based on Nimue, a.k.a. “Queen of Blood” and “Lady of the Lake,” who first appeared in the Hellboy comic books in 2008’s “The Wild Hunt” storyline, depicted as a powerful witch who lived during the time of King Arthur who betrayed her ally Merlin, reaping a reign of terror. However, threatened by her volatility, other witches came together to stop her, cutting her body into pieces and hiding the segments around the world to prevent her reconstitution. Flash forward to the present day and some demonic meddling eventually fulfills that calamity, making the evil Blood Queen Hellboy’s problem.

Sasha Lane (American Honey) has been cast in the Hellboy reboot, according to THR. She will play Alice Monaghan, a character who Hellboy rescued from fairies in the comics and later became his love interest.

Ed Skrein (Deadpool), who was previously cast as Major Ben Daimio, has exited Hellboy after listening to the disappointment and anger over the whitewashing of the Daimio character. Daimio was written as Japanese-American in the Hellboy comics. For more on Skrein’s decision and the public reaction, check out our full article on the subject.

Daimio will instead by played by Daniel Dae Kim, a Korean-American actor best known for his roles on Lost and Hawaii Five-O. The character is described as “a rugged military member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense who, due to a supernatural encounter, can turn into a jaguar when angered or in pain.”

Penelope Mitchell joins the cast of Hellboyreports Deadline. She will play Ganeida, who is described as “an elder witch” who finally decides to take a stand against the millennia-spanning magical meddling of Nimue/the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich). Interestingly, Ganeida is a character taken from the Hellboy comics, depicted as one of Nimue’s abused lackeys in 2008’s “The Wild Hunt” storyline, appearing as a mangled crone. She would reappear in 2011’s “The Storm and the Fury” storyline. However, the casting of Mitchell likely signals a much different interpretation of Ganeida.

Mitchell is probably best known for her 2014-2015 two-season run on The CW’s The Vampire Diaries as Liv Parker, who – to point out potential typecasting – was a witch. She was also a cast member of Netflix’s Hemlock Grove in its 2013 inaugural season. She’s also appeared in films such as CurveThe Curse of Downers Grove and The Fear of Darkness, with appearances in upcoming horror films such as Gnaw, the Nicolas Cage-starring Between Worlds and Look Away.

Hellboy Reboot Story

Writer Andrew Cosby told SilverScreenBeat that we should expect a much darker film than past adaptations. Said Cosby:

“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy. Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.”

The writer also revealed that the first draft of the script is complete.

“Honestly, everyone has just been working overtime to bring that Mignola magic to the big screen. The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be.”

Mike Mignola has been catching up with Newsarama about the upcoming Hellboy movie reboot, which is now simply titled Hellboy, and revealed that the script is closer to this original vision of the character. While Guillermo del Toro took the source material into more fantasy-driven territory, creator Mike Mignola assured fans that the new movie, which will be directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent),will be much darker.

“Where Hellboy II: The Golden Army was a light fantasy film, this will be very much darker – close to a horror film,” said Mignola. “I’ve met some people doing pre-production, and I visit the person doing the creature effects. I’m very happy with what I’ve seen so far: I give them my two cents, then get out of the way. But I’m very happy they’re asking my opinion, and giving me opportunities to solve certain creative problems.”

Mignola also revealed that other members of the BPRD, the paranormal crime-fighting agency Hellboy works for, will appear in the movie. This may mean Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and/or Johann Kraus, but Mignola did not go into detail about the other characters.

“The B.P.R.D. figures into the movie. I don’t want to say who is and who isn’t in the movie,” Mignola told Newsarama. “I think it’s fair to say, however, that the primary focus is Hellboy and not a B.P.R.D. team movie
