Mission: Impossible 6 continues the venerable, ever-evolving Tom Cruise action film franchise that kicked off way back in 1996 with director Brian De Palma’s film adaptation of the popular 1966-1973 television spy series. After high-profiles helmers such as John Woo, J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird followed in the decades-spanning blockbuster sequels, the acclaimed fifth film in 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation injected new life into the franchise with the acquisition of its would-be first recurring director Christopher McQuarrie, who will direct Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Consequently, Tom Cruise’s astoundingly durable secret agent Ethan Hunt will see more slick, fantastical-tech-wielding, laser-grid-dodging suspense in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, joined by a gaggle of familiar faces, along with an impressive array of newcomers!

Mission: Impossible – Fallout Trailer

Mission: Impossible – Fallout has sent a message (that may or may not self-destruct,) alerting moviegoers that its debut trailer will premiere amongst the array of Sunday’s Super Bowl ads.

With that bit of news comes the film’s first official poster. Framed within a silhouette of Cruise is the by-now familiar sight of his character, Ethan Hunt, hanging off a helicopter; a sequence that seems destined to be instantly iconic regarding this particular outing of the suspenseful action franchise

Here’s the first image released from the film, showing Cruise’s latest (obligatory) insane stunt.

And here’s the first official synopsis for the movie, too:

The best intentions often come back to haunt you.  MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong.  Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.

Mission: Impossible 6 Release Date

Mission: Impossible – Fallout will arrive in theaters on July 27, 2018.

Mission: Impossible 6 Cast

Mission: Impossible- Fallout returnees include Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Rebecca Feguson as Ilsa Faust, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickwell, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley and, intriguingly enough, Sean Harris as Solomon Lane – the villain of previous entry Rogue Nation. However, anyone expecting Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt will be disappointed, since commitment to Marvel mega-movie Avengers: Infinity War will keep the actor away from this M:I outing.

The first official look at the assembled Mission: Impossible – Fallout arrived last July, posted by director Christopher McQuarrie and by star Tom Cruise. With Cruise’s Ethan Hunt standing at point, the assembled team behind him (pictured left to right,) are Simon Pegg’s Benji Dunn, Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust and Ving Rhames’s Luther Stickwell.

The casting of Cavill seemingly occurred in real-time for everyone to witness on social media in a playful, but productive Instagram exchange with director Christopher McQuarrie.

Cavill, the current occupant of the cinematic Superman tights, has already put in a Mission: Impossible-worthy performance as the iconic 1960’s television spy Napoleon Solo in the 2015 reboot movie The Man from U.N.C.L.E. As of now, Cavill – who played Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel and 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – has multiple Superman irons in the DC/Warner fire with two Justice League films and a possible solo sequel. He was also seen in April’s Netflix-exclusive Iraq War film Sand Castle, opposite Nicholas Hoult.

The invaluable Angela Bassett of What’s Love Got to Do with It, Malcolm X, and American Horror Story has also been cast in an unspeicified role.

Vanessa Kirby has been cast as an unnamed character, which will apparently be a lead role in the film.

Kirby comes into the film off momentum from her performance as Princess Margaret on Netflix’s Golden Globe-winning historical royal drama series The Crown, previously seen in films such as 2015’s Everest, 2014’s Queen & Country and 2013’s About Time.

Sian Brooke is an unnamed character who will supposedly have a “key role” in the film.

Brooke comes into the film off her performance as the secret villainess Eurus Holmes on the BBC’s Sherlock in Season 4 of the series. The character, the institutionalized younger sister of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes, wielded a frightening genius-level intellect, implementing sisterly enmity toward him with intricately sadistic machinations. Thus, the idea of Brooke playing a villain in M:I 6 is more than feasible.

Brooke also notably fielded the Sherlock role shortly after appearing on stage (and a subsequent TV movie,) in a celebrated production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, playing the madness-afflicted love interest Ophelia opposite Cumberbatch’s starring role as the revenge-fueled Danish prince.

Michelle Monaghan will be accepting the call of IMF again in Mission: Impossible – Fallout as Julia, the wife of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. The role reprisal comes after the former franchise co-star Monaghan was notably absent in 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and only had a cameo in the film before that.

Monaghan’s first run as Julia in Mission: Impossible III took a page out of True Lies/Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Ethan’s new wife Julia being unaware that she was married to a secret agent… well until she is kidnapped in a plot line that was far less progressive than either of those films. But she returned again for a cameo in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol where it is revealed that she and Ethan have divorced, and she faked her death so as to be safe. Presumably, she’s coming out of the supposed afterlife to help Ethan one more time. Although with Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa now a main cast member, perhaps it will be about getting closure?
