Mute is director Duncan Jones’ new film. It’s the one he’s been trying to make for years, ever since he put out Moon, his great debut starring Sam Rockwell. The new movie takes place in Berlin where a bartender played by Alexander Skarsgard must find his missing girlfriend in the seedy underbelly of the city. It’s a sci-fi noir and has us very intrigued.

We’ve been waiting for this for ages, and the first trailer for Mute is finally here…

Yep, that looks cool. Moon is a masterpiece, Source Code is excellent, and Warcraft was, well, it was a little overcooked but not as bad as some would have you believe. In any case, Mute looks like it’s more in line with his first two movies.

Mute Release Date

Mute is about to be here sooner than you expect. Netflix will release the sci-fi mystery on Friday, Feb. 23. So clear your schedule.

Mute Cast & Crew

The film stars Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux and newcomer Seyneb Saleh. Noel Clark, of Doctor Who fame, will also appear in the film. Sam Rockwell, who gave such a stunning performance in Duncan Jones’ debut movie Moon, is also onboard.

The film is directed by Jones and written by Jones and Michael Robert Johnson. Stuart Fenegan serves as producer and Charles J.D. Schissel and Trevor Beattie serve as executive producers.

Clint Mansell will be reuniting with the writer-director to pen the score.

Mute Story

Here’s the official synopsis from Netflix:

Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly.  A pair of wise-cracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.

Mute is set 30 years in the future, in a dystopian Berlin. Skarsgård will play Leo Beiler, a mute bartender. When Leo’s girlfriend goes missing, he sets out to find her. Said Skarsgård of the role: “It’s about a guy who was in an accident as a kid. He’s ex-Amish, so he lives a very monastic life: he doesn’t have a cell phone or anything like that. He’s left the [Amish] community but he still kinda follows the rules.”

“In the tradition of Blade Runner,” Jones told us back in 2012, “it’s a really gritty film noir that happens to take place in the future.”

“It’s an urban Berlin-set movie,” Jones told Den of Geek last year. “If you kind of imagine a futuristic Casablanca—that gives you a little bit of a sense to it.”

“I think it’s somewhere in between Moon and Source Code,” he said about the scale of the film compared to his other three films. “It’s certainly bigger than Moon. It has to be, because the reason I couldn’t make Mute in the first place—as it was going to be my first movie—was that it was too big, so it’s not Moon-sized but it’s probably around Source Code size.”
